Chapter 1 Towards an inclusive model of evidence-based care

http://clinicalevidence.bmj.com/ceweb/index.html This is an interesting, very clinically orientated website that examines the evidence around a variety of medical conditions and is regularly updated.

www.casp-uk.net The home of the Critical Appraisal Skills Programme, an Oxford-based organisation concerned with improving the understanding of research evidence in health and social care.

www.cochrane.org The home of over 5,000 systematic clinical evidence reviews.

www.evidence.nhs.uk This provides access to the latest clinical and non-clinical evidence for practice.
Click on the ‘A–Z of Topics’ tab and select a clinical condition. Pay special attention to the ‘Evidence Uncertainty’ tab; here you will find numerous examples of areas of practice where the evidence remains questionable.

www.nice.org.uk This is the website for the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence where you might examine some of the criteria NICE uses in order to evaluate medications and interventions for clinical practice.

Chapter 2 Sources of knowledge for evidence-based care

www.thecochranelibrary.com/view/0/index.html The UK Cochrane Centre is one of twelve centres worldwide that facilitate and co-ordinate the publication of systematic reviews of randomised controlled trials. It also provides training for contributors. To search this site, enter via the Cochrane Library webpage.

www.dh.gov.uk The Department of Health publishes many documents that provide policy, standards, recommendations and guidance that are relevant to nursing and healthcare in the UK in general. The ‘Health care’ page provides links to all healthcare publications and to the National Service Frameworks (NSFs) that provide standards for care in a range of areas, including

www.institute.nhs.uk Website of the NHS Institute for Innovation and Improvement which seeks to support the NHS in transforming healthcare by the rapid development and dissemination of new ways of working.

www.intute.ac.uk A free online service that helps you to find the best online resources (reviewed by subject specialists) for your studies and research.

www.library.nhs.uk NHS Evidence, Health Information Resources website. Provides access to a wide range of resources and materials about health and social care.

www.nice.org.uk NICE is an independent organisation responsible for providing national guidance on promoting good health and preventing ill health. It provides details of the latest evidence-based guidelines, guidance and implementation and quality initiatives.

www.nmc-uk.org Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) website. This is nursing and midwifery’s regulatory body and the website contains policy documents and guidelines related to nursing and midwifery practice.

www.npsa.nhs.uk NHS National Patient Safety Agency website, which aims to improve safe patient care by informing, supporting and influencing the health sector.

www.statistics.gov.uk Office of National Statistics website. Provides useful population data pertaining to diseases and treatments that is of interest when describing the background to a health topic of interest.

www.patientopinion.org.uk Encourages patients to say what they liked or did not like about care received to inform other patients about healthcare services (also useful for helping nurses and other healthcare workers to reflect on their clinical decision making).
