Chapter 1. Systems Theory

Chapter 2. Behavioral and Cognitive Theories

Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis
(http://seab.envmed.rochester.edu/jaba/
Considered by many to be the preeminent behavioral journal in the field, JABA began publishing in 1968.  It focuses on publishing experimental research of behavior analytic interventions applied to problems and issues of social importance. Almost all its empirical papers involve the use of single-system research designs of high internal validity.  Although it has an emphasis on papers relevant to the fields of developmental disabilities and to education, it also publishes a wide array of work related to community intervention, mental health, safety, and welfare.

Behaviour Research and Therapy
Behaviour Research and Therapy encompasses all of what is commonly referred to as cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT). The major focus is on the following: experimental analyses of psychopathological processes linked to prevention and treatment; the development and evaluation of empirically-supported interventions; predictors, moderators and mechanisms of behaviour change; and dissemination of evidence-based treatments to general clinical practice. In addition to traditional clinical disorders, the scope of the journal also includes behavioural medicine.

Behavior and Social Issues
http://www.uic.edu/htbin/cgiwrap/bin/ojs/index.php/bsi
Behavior and Social Issues is a peer-reviewed, interdisciplinary journal that serves as  a primary scholarly outlet for articles that advance the scientific analysis of human social behavior, particularly with regard to understanding and influencing important social problems. The primary intellectual frameworks for the journal are the natural science of behavior, and the sub-discipline of cultural analytic science. The journal is particularly interested in publishing work related to issues with social justice, human rights, and environmental implications, but all significant social issues are of interest.  BSI is edited by social worker Mark Mattaini with the Jane Addams College of Social Work at the University of Illinois in Chicago.

Behavior Modification
http://www.sagepub.com/journalsProdDesc.nav?prodId=Journal200900&level1=K00&currTree=Subjects&
For more than 20 years, researchers, academics and practitioners have turned to Behavior Modificationfor innovative and insightful research, reports, and reviews on applied behavior modification. Each issue offers successful assessment and modification techniques applicable to problems in psychiatric, clinical, educational, and rehabilitative settings, as well as treatment manuals and program descriptions. These practical features help you follow the process of clinical research and to apply it to your own behavior modification interventions. (from the journal website)

www.abainternational.org
The ABAI was founded in 1977 as a nonprofit membership organization for the purpose of contributing to the well-being of society by developing, enhancing and supporting the growth and vitality of the science of behavior analysis through research, education, and practice. Social workers are welcome to join ABAI, and some obtain state certification as a Behavior Analyst, a credential separate from one’s social work license.  ABAI sponsors an active journals program, annual conferences in North America and also separate conferences in other countries, a certification program for practitioners, an accreditation program for academic programs in behavior analysis, an employment registry, and other resources.

ABCT provides a well-run journals program, an annual convention, a continuing education operation, public information services, a mentoring program, and information on obtaining research grants.

The B. F. Skinner Foundation

The B. F. Skinner Foundation is the authoritative site for information about B. F. Skinner and the field he initiated. It was founded in 1989 to promote significant literary and scientific works in the analysis of behavior and to educate both professionals and the public about the science of behavior. It provides limited access to some free materials about Dr. Skinner, and a store where copies of his books may be purchased. It also produces a quarterly newsletter.

Online Sources
www.Scienceofbehavior.com
This website provides a series of free and low-cost individual tutorials about the field of behavior analysis and of evidence-based interventions to solve real world problems in schools, homes and the community.  The tutorials are formatted in a programmed instruction method, highly interactive text presenting a little bit of information at a time, starting with simple concepts to highly complex ones.  You advance through the tutorial as you provide correct answers, and are redirected to refresher material if you provide incorrect answers.  These tutorials are impossible to fail! Topic include a general introduction to behavior analysis, a series of seven tutorials titled “Why we are not working to save the world”, largely based on a paper by B. F. Skinner on that topic, advanced topics in behavior analysis, modules on “Freedom, determinism and responsibility”, and ethics and professional behavior.  Some of these tutorials can be completed for continuing education credits.

The most reliable online source of information about psychoanalysis are the following websites:

www.ipa.org.uk
This is the website of the International Psychoanalytic Association (IPA). This site contains information about professional conferences and other matters of interest to psychoanalytically oriented clinicians. Of particular importance is the "Research" section of the IPA website. At the time of this writing, the tab for the "RESEARCH" section is on the left hand side of the homepage. The research section contains a remarkable compendium of research papers from around the world on virtually every aspect of psychoanalysis and psychoanalytic psychotherapy. Be sure to browse around on the section, and "click" freely to download papers and other materials.

www.apsa.org
This is the website of the American Psychoanalytic Association (APsaA). Like the IPA website, it includes a great deal of information about psychoanalysis and psychoanalytic research findings. This website also includes much additional information about psychoanalysis, including reading lists for interested students, information about upcoming events, important publications, social issues and advocacy efforts. Of particular interest to social workers aspiring to careers as psychoanalytic therapists or analysts is the "Fellowship" program of the American Psychoanalytic Association, which enables qualified social work students to participate in APsaA educational programs. Information about the Fellowship program is on the site.
www.napsac.info
This site, still under development, is sponsored by the North American Psychoanalytic Confederation (NAPsaC). NAPsaC is an umbrella organization, comprised of all the North American component societies of the IPA. When fully operational, this site will include information about psychoanalytic conferences and events around the country.
