About the Editors and Contributors

Dr Rachel Lewis is a Registered Occupational Psychologist, a lecturer and Course Director in Occupational and Business Psychology at Kingston Business School as well as being a Director of Affinity Health at Work. She combines her academic career with regular conference speaking, consultancy and training, focusing on the links between leadership, management and employee well-being. She has just completed editing a new Wiley-Blackwell Handbook of Leadership to be published in January 2013.

Dr Lara Zibarras is a Lecturer at City University London and a Registered Occupational Psychologist. Her key research areas are employee selection (par­ticularly the candidate’s perspective); pro-environmental behaviour in the work­place and innovation. She has published widely in academic journals and presented her research at both national and international conferences. Lara has also worked as a consultant for a range of public and private sector organisations in the areas of selection, training, development and psychometric assessment.

Diane Aitchison (along with Kevin Nind) is a Director of All in the Mind Ltd. Established in 2003, we work with clients and individuals to achieve of their best. We are Occupational Psychologists, Chartered via the British Psychological Society and Registered with the Health Professions Council. We specialise in leadership and management development initiatives (including training, workshops, development centres and coaching), occupational assessment, stress management and perfor­mance management. We have extensive experience in supporting a broad range of clients across all sectors including the Civil Service, automotive, engineering, finan­cial, housing, pharmaceutical, and retail sectors. We work to recruit, develop and support people at all levels from executive to front-line staff. In addition to support­ing our clients, we contribute to the on-going success and future of our profession. We work on British Psychological Society Committees to assess and ensure occupa­tional testing training courses meet stringent BPS standards. We also support the Chartership process and coach new psychologists through it.

Juliette Alban-Metcalfe is a Chartered Occupational Psychologist and Chief Executive of Real World Group (www.realworld-group.com). Her particular pas­sion is for increasing employee engagement, diversity and inclusion through lead­ership. Based on her research with colleagues, Juliette has spoken at international conferences, published numerous papers and articles, and works with organisa­tions globally. She has an MSc in Organizational Psychology from Birkbeck College, University of London, and an MS in Positive Organization Development and Change from Case Western Reserve University, Ohio.

Vicki Ashworth is a Senior Consultant Psychologist for Work Psychology Group and a Chartered Psychologist and registered Occupational Psychologist with the Health and Care Professionals Council (HCPC).Vicki specialises in the fields of assessment and selection for both the corporate and public sector and works in close partnership with clients and stakeholders to ensure that recommended approaches are fit for purpose and reflect cutting edge practice and theory. Her areas of expertise include assessment centre design and evaluation, development and psychometric evaluation of situational judgement tests;; and job analyses and competency modeling. She has had her work in these areas published in a number of peer-reviewed papers and presented at national and international conferences. Previously, Vicki worked for the National Policing Improvement Agency (NPIA), an agency that provides assessment solutions within the police service.

Dr David Biggs is the Programme Director for the MScs in Occupational and Business Psychology at the University of Gloucestershire. David as a consultant has provided training, recruitment and research services and still completes associate work in this field. David’s research interests lie in non-traditional employment, the use of technology at work and in consulting. More recently, David has examined management in terms of worker relations, leadership and organisational change.

Dr Kamal Birdi is a Senior Lecturer at the Institute of Work Psychology, University of Sheffield and also a Chartered Occupational Psychologist. He has researched and advised extensively for over 20 years on evaluating and improving the impact of employee training and development interventions, developing employee cre­ativity and assessing the influences on organisational innovation. In 2010, he was given the B.P.S. Division of Occupational Psychology Academic Contribution to Practice Award for his efforts to improve organisational practices
Dr Iain Coyne is Associate Professor in Occupational Psychology at the Institute of Work, Health and Organisations, Nottingham University; a Chartered Psychologist and a Registered Occupational Psychologist. At Nottingham, Dr Coyne lectures on employee relations and motivation, but his research interests are specifically in bully­ing and productive/counterproductive behaviour at work. He has written a number of peer-reviewed papers and has presented at national and international conferences on these topics as well as co-editing a book on bullying in different contexts.

Eugene Farrell has over 25 years experience in public and private healthcare and for the past 15 years has specialised in the development and provision of employee support services, including integrated healthcare, absence manage­ment, employee assistance, wellbeing and occupational health services. He has
authored articles and research on stress, absence, presenteeism, financial wellbe­ing, health well-being and EAP effectiveness. Former Chair of the UK EAPA, International Director of the US-based Global EAP Association, and board mem­ber of Employee Assistance European Federation.

Dr Fiona Gavin is a Chartered Occupational Psychologist and is currently a Lecturer in Occupational Psychology at the University of Nottingham; her research interests focus on workplace diversity and ‘modern’ forms of discrimination. Collaborators include public-sector, private-sector and charitable organisations, including those with national and international profiles. Having completed a diversity audit for the Council of Europe in Strasbourg, Fiona has recently collabo­rated with the European Parliament on research into the implication of European Enlargement on employees from the widest possible range of European nations.

Dr Nigel Guenole is a lecturer in work psychology and programme director for the MSc Occupational Psychology at Goldsmiths University of London. He is the director of research for Kenexa High Performance Institute in London. Dr Guenole’s work focuses on psychological profiling for personnel selection and development, developing leader capability, and organizational performance. His research has been published in interna­tional journals and he is a regular presenter and international psychology conferences.

Andrew Kinder is a Chartered Counselling and Chartered Occupational Psychologist. He is the Past Chair of British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy’s Workplace Division (www.bacpworkplace.org.uk) and was recently awarded with a Fellowship from BACP for his contribution to workplace counselling. He is Vice Chair of the EAPA UK. He works for a large occupational health/counselling provider as their Chief Psychologist and has published widely with an active interest in personal resilience, coaching, stress man­agement, trauma support and EAPs/workplace counselling. Dr Anna Koczwara is a Registered Occupational Psychologist with particular expertise in the areas of selection, assessment, and organisational development. She was awarded a PhD from the University of London for her research into the identification of leadership potential in the financial services industry. In 2009 Anna was named the British Psychological Society Occupational Psychology Practitioner of the Year. Anna held the role of Associate Director at Work Psychology Group whilst contributing to this book and has since moved to become Deputy Head of Assessment with Royal Bank of Scotland Group.
Dr Hilary McDermott is a Lecturer in Psychology within the School of Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences at Loughborough University. Her research expertise concerns health and well-being with a strong emphasis on injury prevention, par­ticularly within the context of work and the work environment. Her current work focuses on the occupational health and well-being of those working as activity leaders within the outdoor leisure industry. She has published her work in a num­ber of peer-reviewed journals within her field

Dr Fehmidah Munir is a Senior Lecturer in Psychology within the School of Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences at Loughborough University. Her research expertise lies in understanding and managing ill-health at work; design and management of work to enhance occupational health and well-being; understanding the influ­ence of individual and organisational factors on presenteeism, sickness absence and return-to-work outcomes. She has written numerous academic articles, book chapters and reports.

Dr Tracey Reid has more than 20 years experience working in Human Resources for a variety of organisations including Local Government and is currently pro­viding Stress Management and Management Training within the Care Home Industry. She has worked as a Teaching Associate at the Institute of Work Psychology, University of Sheffield and as a Teaching Fellow at the University of Hull. Her research primarily focuses on the areas of stress, health and well-being, with a particular emphasis on the effect on-call working has on the individual in relation to these outcomes. She is a regular presenter at the European Academy of Occupational Health Psychology Conferences.

Dr Varuni Wimalasiri is a Chartered Occupational Psychologist and lecturer at Exeter University Business School. Her research interests are in the area of Human Factors and Creativity. Her related work has focused on understanding and enhancing decision making in high risk work environments. She has col­laborated with other Human Factors academics and practitioners to develop interventions to help improve error-prone (or risky) organisational systems. Varuni writes journal papers and reports, and gives conference presentations for academic and practitioner audiences based on her research work. She also teaches postgraduate students at Exeter University Business School undertaking modules in her specialist area.
