Drug & Behavioral Compulsions:
This video examines the biological and environmental reasons that people become addicted to substances such as legal drugs, e.g., alcohol, tobacco, and prescription medications; illegal drugs, e.g., cocaine, heroin, and marijuana; or behaviors such as eating disorders, compulsive sexual activity, and compulsive gambling. Through the use of animation, live action, and graphics, the conflict between old brain cravings and new brain reasoning, even down to the cellular level, is explored. The video shows that any addiction is an inherited, learned, and practiced set of behaviors which can be treated and prevented. The video also examines the relationships among addictions and related behaviors, including attention-deficit and hyperactivity disorders.

Brain Science as a Means of Understanding Delinquency and Substance Abuse in Youth
In the first half, Dr. Beauchaine discusses the importance of understanding the brain mechanisms associated with impulsivity, which allows us to identify at-risk children early in life. This provides opportunities for prevention of later substance abuse, school drop out, and delinquency. In the second half, Dr. Tapert addresses the extent to which heavy alcohol and other drug use during the teenage years might affect brain development and cognitive performance into young adulthood. She also describes her research projects using neuropsychological testing and brain imaging to better understand cognition in youth who are heavy users of alcohol and drugs.

Alcohol: A Women’s Health Issue.
Alcohol abuse and alcoholism are often perceived as problems that only affect men, but alcoholism has been on the rise among women for the last 30 years. This program features narratives of seven women recovering from problems with alcohol. These stories make it clear that it's possible to miss danger signs and that social drinking can become problem drinking, which in turn can evolve into addiction.

Recent studies point both to the need for gender-specific services for women and to the greater effectiveness of such approaches compared to more traditional treatment modalities. This program will examine how treatment services are changing to help women successfully navigate the road to recovery. It also explores other issues that can affect their recovery progress, such as child care, co-occurring disorders, and domestic violence.
