Chapter 9: The Viability of Treatment Perspectives

Critical Knowledge About 12-Step Programs for Criminal Justice Professionals

The strengths and weaknesses of 12-step programs and how they integrate with "what works" in the correctional field are discussed during this 3-hour program. The following topics are addressed: enhancing communication and cooperation and supporting the appropriate use of 12-step programs; recognizing the benefits of 12-step programs throughout the criminal justice system; understanding how the mission of 12-step programs complements the goal of corrections; special issues with 12-step programs -- legal and mandatory participation and conflicting research and literature; and implementing what has been learned. Chapter 10: Community-Based Residential Treatment Facilities

Balfour House Secure Residential Treatment Facility Location

This video demonstrates some of the issues discussed in your text regarding the placement of residential treatment facilities and relations between the agency and the community. This video shows that, if agencies are not proactive and if they do not develop a community rapport, citizens can and will rally against their attempts to implement programs that may be critical. This also demonstrates why community corrections planners must be prudent in their choice of locations when implementing new programs.

Chapter 13: Specialized and Problematic Offender Typologies

Sex Offenders

This video provides an interview with community supervision officers who work with the sex offender population. This interview demonstrates how sex offenders tend to be compliant while on supervision but yet are not necessarily reformed. This video has footage with community supervision officers using GPS tracking to locate offenders.

Female Offenders in the Community

The needs, strengths, weaknesses, and risks associated with female offenders are examined. Topics discussed during this teleconference include: the unique and complex issues surrounding female offenders; barriers that female offenders encounter in the community; techniques and skills for effecting positive change; outside resources to assist in supervision; and the challenges and rewards of working with female offenders.

This is a fairly lengthy videoconference but it is really comprehensive and includes a number of practitioners and a number of female offenders who share their perspectives on the issue of female offending and female offender treatment in the community. This video is very pertinent to this content area and to the course as a whole.

This is a good video that is clearly connected to Chapter 13 of your text.
